San Bruno serves as warning to invest in infrastructure

Recognizing its aging pipelines, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission embarked on the extensive Water System Improvement Program in 2002 to renovate the historic Hetch Hetchy Water System. Construction began on the water system in 1913, with the first delivery of water taking place in 1934. The system is an engineering marvel in itself – its water travels over 160 miles to the Bay Area simply on gravity. While we’re proud and thankful for the system’s dedication over the last 74 years, we also recognize that it’s time for some upgrades.
